Playing turist in Theatro Municipal Rio de Janeiro

Most cariocas (people who were born in Rio) usually spend their spare time going to the beach, to the movies,to the theater to watch a good play, to a show ,but really few of them has the habit of visiting touristic attractions.

Yesterday, I decided to play turist and do something only turists do: I paid a visit to Theatro Municipal for a guided tour.

Theatro Municipal (Municipal Theater) is one of the most important theaters in Rio where big plays, operas, ballets and concerts take place. I had already been their many times before watching operas, concerts and ballets, but it was the first time to be there as an insider.

And it was so worth it! Learning a bit more about the history of the building and the details of its recent restaurantion was really interesting.

Taking photos in an empty theater was one of the highlights of the visit!

Somethings you should know if you’re planning to take the guided tour:

– The guided tour hours  and the admission tickets prices are on the theater website.
– Choose the time you prefer and arrive at least 40 min before to get the pass to buy the admission ticket.

– The guided tour is avaiable in portuguese and english .

My experience: I intended to go to the 2 pm tour, but I arrived their at 1:40pm and the passes for 2pm were already over. So I had to take the pass for the 3 pm tour. If this happen to you don’t worry ,there is a lot to do on the neighborhood (National Library, National Museum of Fine Arts,  Federal Justice Cultural Center ), that’s what I did (more details in a next post).

If you have a chance to take this guided tour don’t miss it! It was a perfect option for a rainy day!

And you ? Have you ever been in Theatro Municipal of Rio de Janeiro?

I will be glad to know what was your impression.

Have a nice day!
