Brazil’s Independence Day

Brazil’s National Flag

Today we celebrate Brazil’s Indepence day.  The date celebrates Brazil’s Declaration of Independence from the United Kingdom of Portugal, Brazil and the Algarves. On September 7, 1822, after receiving orders from the Portuguese parliament limiting his powers in Brazil, Dom Pedro I declared Brazil’’s independence near the Ipiranga River in São Paulo.

The September 7th is a national holiday, when our independence is celebrated in all the state capitals and in many cities throughout the country, where military parades are held.

In Brasília, the capital of Brazil,  the celebration takes place at the Ministries Esplanade with a military parade in the presence of the President of Brazil.

In Rio, the Independence Day Military Parade takes place at Avenida Presidente Vargas, in the city centre of Rio .

When I was a kid, I remember that I liked to watch the Military Parades shown on the TV in the mornings of September 7th. Besides thoses military Parades, it is not so common to see other patriotic demonstrations among Rio citizens.

Enjoy your Sunday!!
