Biscoito Globo

IMG_0406 IMG_0408

It became already a tradition! Everytime I go to the beach with my family we have to eat Biscoito Globo. Each package has the perfect amount for a quick snack in the beach.

It is safe (almost no chance of being spoiled), light (you won’t feel full after eating the whole package) and although I can’t say any longer that it is cheap (R$4,00 for a package of a snack made of “polvilho”( a kind of manioc flour), water, milk and vegetable oil is definitely not cheap), it is quite affordable!

Although you will probably find different kinds of “biscoito de polvilho” (polvilho snack) all over Brazil, you will only find Biscoito Globo in Rio de Janeiro. And the reason of that is that the Biscoito Globo company decided to sell it only in Rio de Janeiro.

It is been such a success since 1954, that the company don’t spend a single pennie in advertising, it is just not necessary!

Biscoito Globo is produced only in its single factory in downtown Rio, which works from Sunday to Sunday and where the street and beach vendors can buy Biscoito Globo to sell in the streets by traffic lights or in Rio beaches.

The color of the package identifies the flavour, red for the sweet and green for the salty !

If you wanna try, prefer buying from the uniformed Mate Leão beach vendors dressing orange in the beaches, who sells Globo and Mate Leão (an ice tea, made of “mate” herb). By the way, it is a perfect combination for a quick bite at the beach!

Restaurante Gaivota, Homemade food in Buzios

IMG_1571 IMG_1561 IMG_1560 IMG_1567 IMG_1568 IMG_1569Sometimes when you are travelling, finding a place to eat that tastes like home can be quite difficult. But in Búzios, this beach town in the state of Rio, to where we go for weekend getaways once in a while, we have already found the perfect place to eat healthy and fresh home-made food tasting like home.

We go to Restaurante Gaivota for quite a long time. It is amazing how this modest family restaurant still remains offering the same standard of delicious food for years. There is no sophistication there.  Just some tables covered with plastic towels, attentive service, fair price and fresh food is enough to keep us faithful to this place over the years.

This last visit was a couple of weekends ago. We were arriving in Búzios by lunchtime after a 3 hour ride from Rio de Janeiro and it looked just perfect to make a pit-stop at Restaurante Gaivota for lunch, before we go to the inn we were staying.

Restaurante Gaivota is located near Geribá Beach, our favourite beach to stay in Búzios. So whenever we go to Buzios we always go there to have the same delicious meal, “Cação” Fillet (“cação” is the commercial name for small shark in Brazil) sided by rice and beans, french fries and salad. They have many options in their menu but  we just order the same dish every time! We just like to keep the tradition!

They like to keep things simple and you won’t find their website or Facebook page, because they just don’t have it. But believe me, if you are planning to visit Buzios, Gaivota is totally worth the visit! Try it and then let me know what did you find!

My favourite italian restaurant in Rio

IMG_7348 IMG_9711

IMG_9724 IMG_9720Once in a while, me and my family enjoy weekend days in Barra da Tijuca. We like not only going to the beach there, as I already mentioned before, but also because my favourite italian restaurant in Rio is located there.

Of course I have not tried all the italian restaurants in Rio, but I can say that I have tried enough, of all price ranges, to elect Fratelli, the one in Barra da Tijuca, as my favourite one. (They have also a branch in Leblon, but I didn’t try it yet.)

I love the food, made with very fresh ingredients, the very attentive staff, the location, just in front of Barra da Tijuca beach and the great view!

Another highligh it’s their wine list, with bottles from different countries like Italy, Brazil, Argentina, New Zealand, Portugal, Chile, France.

The prices can be considered something between medium to high, but for the quality of food and service I find it very fair.

The menu has a great variety of dishes from pasta to fish. I have already tasted the Gnocchi with fresh asparagus, saffron and brie cheese, the Lasagna alla bolognese, the Steamed sole filet with lemon sauce, served with spinach cream. All of them very tasty!

But my favourite dish is the Raviolli alla Caprese, so simple dish, but so delicious! A raviolli stuffed with buffalo mozzarella and cottage, in a tomato sauce and basil.

For dessert, our choice is always the Petit gateau of chocolate and almonds with ice cream and a cup of espresso coffee.

Another good point of Fratelli Barra is that they are a kids-friendly restaurant. On Sundays it is common to see many families with kids having lunch their.

Although it might look a little sophisticated restaurant, the dress code is quite casual at lunch time. We can often see people who just left  the beach, wearing their flip-flops and going to Fratelli for lunch. At dinner time, following the smart casual dress code is a nice choice.

If you have the chance of being in Barra da Tijuca, give a try for Fratelli !!! I bet you won’t regret it!

Casa Momus, a sophisticated option in Lapa

Last night, me and my husband went out for a happy hour with a couple of friends! It was a special night! My friend, the guy, would introduce us to his fianceé and give us their wedding invitation. I know this guy for 14 years, and although we don’t see too much lately he is a very good friend and I was very happy to know that he is getting married soon. We worked together in two companies and he ended becaming a close friend. Although we have the same age, I consider him almost as an older brother and he was one of the groomsmen on our wedding. So there was plenty of reasons for a happy hour celebration!

We didn’t know very well where to go, and we ended up in Rua do Lavradio , in Lapa neighborhood, looking for a bar to have a couple of drinks. But we were seduced by the atmosphere of an apparently new house in Rua do Lavradio, called Casa Momus.

The soft lightening of the place invited us in and we decided to stay and try this new place.

This restaurant/bar is in a preserved old house, from the 19th century. The decoration is modern and cozy, and the music is relaxing.

The menu is based in mediterranean influences. I’ve tried the bruschettes trio and the asparagus risotto. Both of them very tasty!

Although they recommended for drinks  the Spritz, an italian drink, me and my friends fiancée decided to toast the night with a glass of wine. While the boys, preferred beer.

The happy hour turned out in a lovely dinner, with a combination of tasty food and lively conversation with good friends! We couldn’t make a better choice than Casa Momus for last night.

It is a great option in Lapa, totally different from the samba houses and botecos from the neighborhood. It has a great atmosphere and the prices are quite fair.

I’m definitely planning another visit!!

Saturday in Jardim Botanico neighborhood

IMG_0396 IMG_0438 IMG_0442

My sister and I had made special plans for this saturday. We would like to have brunch at Confeitaria Colombo, at Forte de Copacabana, a perfect place for having breakfast and lunch outdoors, enjoying the beautiful view of Copacabana beach while eating all the delicious appetizers of the traditional Confeitaria Colombo. But we didn’t count that the weather would be so bad. The weather forecast said that the day would be cloudy with occasional showers during all day. And they were not wrong. When I woke up and saw the heavy and grey clouds in the sky I knew that we would have to change our plans, as we couldn’t risk getting caught in the rain with three children.

So my sister-in-law suggested trying a different and new place in Jardim Botanico neighborhood , Emporio Jardim, a mix of bakery, delicatessen and bistrot.

We were a group of ten, including the three kids, and as we arrived by 12 pm, the restaurant was crowded and we had to wait a little for a table. But the staff was all very solicitous and after a 15 minutes wait we are all set in the table ordering our brunch.

I had a tasteful omelet sided by a green salad and the most delicious gluten-free toast, I have ever had, totally different from those hard gluten-free toasts I’m used to buy in the supermarket. The cappuccino was also very tasty. The place is charming and the food is great, but they still need some adjustments in the service, we found the staff a little confused to handle with orders of big groups. Anyway, we had a lovely time, and it is totally worth the visit!

By the time we finished our brunch we had three little kids full of energy to spend. As it was not raining and as a gift for the kids nice behavior in the restaurant we decided to go to Jardim Botanico , so that they could run around and play a little bit. After a 10 min walk we were all there!

Everybody had fun! Kids playing, adults talking and appreciating nature and me, as usual, photographing everything.

After a while playing in the playgound area we started to feel some rain drops. A light rain, but it was enough to make us leave.

This full day ended in my apartment where my boy played with his cousins and we all ate a good snack: pães de queijo and passion fruit juice!

Have a nice weekend!
