Miam Miam, cozy restaurant and comfort food

Botafogo neighborhood has plenty of good restaurants,  and Miam Miam is one of them. This small restaurant is housed in a small white colonial building and is fully furnished with vintage pieces, which gives it a relaxed vibe and a cozy atmosphere.

Last week, me and my family decided to go there for dinner. We didn’t have a reservation and we were lucky to find one last table left.

It wasn’t our first time there, but it was our first time with my little boy.  The staff is very nice and was very attentive to my little boy order. (I don’t know till when I will still be calling him “little”, he is already almost the same height as I am)!!

The menu is inspired in the “comfort food” concept and has a good variety of dishes! I ordered the eggplant lasagna , my husband the file mignon and gnocchi, and my son an option from the Kids Menu.

We had a lovely time ! Delicious food for a quite fair price!

It is a nice place to go for dinner with friends or just for drinks! Recently. Miam Miam was highlithted in the “Guide Michelin Rio e São Paulo 2015”, in the “Bib Gourmand” category, for restaurants that offers “exceptional good food at moderate prices”.

It is recommended to make a reservation because it is usually crowded, even during weekdays.

If you have a chance, pay a visit there and then stop by My Little Rio Journal to tell me your impressions about it.

There is a special place at Copacabana beach that I believe that everyone visiting Rio should go, this place is Forte de Copacabana.

The Fort is a current military base and it hosts the Museu Histórico do Exército (Historical Museum of the Army) and is located on the right end of Copacabana beach, the place known as Posto 6.

After paying the ticket (R$6) you can access the Fort area, the museum and the Cafes. The Cafes are one of the highlights of this place in my opinion. It is a great place to have a nice breakfast, a quick lunch or just a cup of coffee overlooking Copacabana beach, in one of the Cafes, the traditional Confeitaria Colombo or Café 18 do Forte.

The last time I was there for breakfast, it was when my sister Quiqui was visiting Rio and we had breakfast with my friends at Confeitaria Colombo, as you can check here. On Saturdays and Sundays, there is usually a big waiting line for tables in those two cafes. So if you don’t want to wait too much time, I suggest arriving like 30 minutes before the opening time to guarantee a table with a good view of the beach.

Although I have already been there a thousand times I never get tired of it, and once in a while I go there. Sometimes only to relax overlooking the beautiful scenery of Copacabana beach.

My favourite italian restaurant in Rio

IMG_7348 IMG_9711

IMG_9724 IMG_9720Once in a while, me and my family enjoy weekend days in Barra da Tijuca. We like not only going to the beach there, as I already mentioned before, but also because my favourite italian restaurant in Rio is located there.

Of course I have not tried all the italian restaurants in Rio, but I can say that I have tried enough, of all price ranges, to elect Fratelli, the one in Barra da Tijuca, as my favourite one. (They have also a branch in Leblon, but I didn’t try it yet.)

I love the food, made with very fresh ingredients, the very attentive staff, the location, just in front of Barra da Tijuca beach and the great view!

Another highligh it’s their wine list, with bottles from different countries like Italy, Brazil, Argentina, New Zealand, Portugal, Chile, France.

The prices can be considered something between medium to high, but for the quality of food and service I find it very fair.

The menu has a great variety of dishes from pasta to fish. I have already tasted the Gnocchi with fresh asparagus, saffron and brie cheese, the Lasagna alla bolognese, the Steamed sole filet with lemon sauce, served with spinach cream. All of them very tasty!

But my favourite dish is the Raviolli alla Caprese, so simple dish, but so delicious! A raviolli stuffed with buffalo mozzarella and cottage, in a tomato sauce and basil.

For dessert, our choice is always the Petit gateau of chocolate and almonds with ice cream and a cup of espresso coffee.

Another good point of Fratelli Barra is that they are a kids-friendly restaurant. On Sundays it is common to see many families with kids having lunch their.

Although it might look a little sophisticated restaurant, the dress code is quite casual at lunch time. We can often see people who just left  the beach, wearing their flip-flops and going to Fratelli for lunch. At dinner time, following the smart casual dress code is a nice choice.

If you have the chance of being in Barra da Tijuca, give a try for Fratelli !!! I bet you won’t regret it!

Casa Momus, a sophisticated option in Lapa

Last night, me and my husband went out for a happy hour with a couple of friends! It was a special night! My friend, the guy, would introduce us to his fianceé and give us their wedding invitation. I know this guy for 14 years, and although we don’t see too much lately he is a very good friend and I was very happy to know that he is getting married soon. We worked together in two companies and he ended becaming a close friend. Although we have the same age, I consider him almost as an older brother and he was one of the groomsmen on our wedding. So there was plenty of reasons for a happy hour celebration!

We didn’t know very well where to go, and we ended up in Rua do Lavradio , in Lapa neighborhood, looking for a bar to have a couple of drinks. But we were seduced by the atmosphere of an apparently new house in Rua do Lavradio, called Casa Momus.

The soft lightening of the place invited us in and we decided to stay and try this new place.

This restaurant/bar is in a preserved old house, from the 19th century. The decoration is modern and cozy, and the music is relaxing.

The menu is based in mediterranean influences. I’ve tried the bruschettes trio and the asparagus risotto. Both of them very tasty!

Although they recommended for drinks  the Spritz, an italian drink, me and my friends fiancée decided to toast the night with a glass of wine. While the boys, preferred beer.

The happy hour turned out in a lovely dinner, with a combination of tasty food and lively conversation with good friends! We couldn’t make a better choice than Casa Momus for last night.

It is a great option in Lapa, totally different from the samba houses and botecos from the neighborhood. It has a great atmosphere and the prices are quite fair.

I’m definitely planning another visit!!

10 places to have a drink in Rio

2014-05-02 16.52.33Recently  World Travel Guide  invited me to share with their audience my top 10 bars to go out for a drink in Rio. In the same article they interviewed the Chef and Author, Leticia Schwartz, to list her Top 5 restaurants in Rio. If you are in Rio for the World Cup, you should check her favourite restaurants. You can read the whole article here.

Now I share with you here my list of favourite bars and some photos I found in my photo gallery!!

When talking about going out for drinks, Rio has a great range of options to fit all budgets. From the most simple boteco (that’s what we call very simple bars) to the more sophisticated and fancy decorated bars, you’ll easily find one that fits your style.

  •  Bar Urca (Rua Candido Gaffree 205, Urca) is a very traditional bar in the quiet Urca neighbourhood. The tables overlooking Guanabara Bay are the perfect spot for a cold beer and a plate of delicious bolinhos de bacalhau (codfish balls).

  • Azul Marinho (Avenida Francisco Bhering, Hotel Arpoador Inn, Arpoador) is a beautiful bar in front of Arpoador Beach. This is the perfect spot to watch one of the most beautiful sunsets in Rio, as the sun falls behind Dois Irmãos Mountain. The prices are a little expensive but the stunning view makes up for it.
  • Paris Bar (Praia do Flamengo 340, Flamengo) is one of my favourite choices when I’m in the mood for something a little more sophisticated. Located on the second floor of Casa Julieta de Serpa cultural centre, Paris Bar draws a hip, young crowd. Alex Mesquita, elected Rio’s best barman in 2013, has a great selection of drinks and cocktails on offer. My favourite is the Parfait Amour, a purple liqueur served in a tea cup.

  • The lively mood of Shooters Cocktails Bar (Rua Nelson Mandela 100, Botafogo) makes this bar one of my favourite for drinks in the Botafogo neighbourhood. Try to go midweek, when it is not so crowded. It is definitely a great choice to hangout with friends, try different cocktails and listen to music.

  • OsBar (Avenida Calógeras 18, Cinelandia) is a bar and restaurant in Cinelandia, the downtown neighbourhood close to the National Museum of Fine Arts. As in any boteco, don’t expect any sophistication in OsBar! But you can taste the coldest beer on earth and the food is great as well. On Fridays they have a delicious and typical Brazilian feijoada (a traditional beef and pork stew). It is a great choice for lunch, especially during happy hour.
  •  Deck Bar (Avenida Atlântica 2964, Copacabana) is a bar on the rooftop floor of Pestana Rio Atlântica Hotel. Order a beer, a caipirinha or a glass of wine, and enjoy the breathtaking view of Copacabana Beach. If you like to party, go on a Thursday, Friday or Saturday when the resident DJ takes to the decks.

  •  Rio Rock Blues (Rua do Riachuelo 20, Lapa) is the place to go for those who love rock music and want to have a lively experience in Lapa. A nice selection of appetizers, all kinds of drinks and good quality live rock and roll makes this a winner for those looking for a party.
  • Bar D’Hotel (Avenida Delfim Moreira 696, Leblon) This trendy-chic restaurant on the second floor of Marina All Suites Hotel is great for a couple of romantic drinks or to have dinner with friends. The great variety of cocktails and the retro décor are the highlights. For a table with a beach view, it’s better to make reservations.
  • Paxeco Bar (Rua Pacheco Leão 724D, Jardim Botanico) is in the heart of the Jardim Botanico neighbourhood. The bar has an open terrace where you can view the Botanical Garden’s palm trees and a great night view of Christ the Redeemer. Again, this is a place more suited to romantic, intimate drinks on a moonlit night.
  •  Antigamente  (Rua do Ouvidor 43, Centro) is my favourite bar in the bohemian corridor of Rua do Ouvidor for its informal and pleasant atmosphere. The excellent food (try the cod fish dishes), delicious appetizers and good service makes it a great choice for lunch. Take a table on the sidewalk, drink a cold beer and taste the delicious pastel de costela (spicy meat cakes) while waiting for your mains. Perfect!
